Description: Lovesickness in Renaissance Literature and Culture
Early modern writers understood lovesickness to be a dangerous physical
illness, which could inflame the body, take possession of the mind, and
overthrow an individual's rational self-control. The talk will explore
lovesickness' medical construction, its divergent moral meanings, its
social and seductive functions, and the complex ways it is imagined by
writers in plays and poetry from the period.
