Yu Yan Chen was born in a fishing village in China but grew up in New York City. Enchanted by the travellers tales her grandfather told, she set sail to seek her own adventures. She has travelled the world, interned for the UN radio, produced a short film, and interpreted for Chinese writers in the 2006/7 World Voices Festival organised by Pen America.
Django a la Creole
In term of wanderings
I too am a Gypsy.
Ive carried a ferry, a village
and several seas.
You ask me what it feels like
to move on and on
Bite into a chili
imagine Djangos fingers
grinding the strings:
every nerve aflame.
Every chord longs for
the smell of dew
before ashes.
As the last bus pulls in
a lone fox walks into the parking lot
its bushy tail ragged.
