Sahra Adan is from Somalia. She was forced to leave her family, her friends and her home behind in Somalia in order to flee the civil war that is still going on in her country. She came to the UK in September 2000.
El Tanbura 7th June, 2009
It was really interesting, funny, entertaining and very emotional for me. It took me back 20 years to my country of origin. My memory came alive and I realised how bad homesickness can be for people when they move to another country.
Everybody was watching, laughing, enjoying themselves and some even danced on the stage.
I remember when I was in Somalia my friends and me we used to go to almost every concert in our city. There are some differences between concerts here and in Somalia. In Somalia we never dance on the stage because it is not respectable to dance on the stage.
Here is a short poem to express the feelings the concert inspired, first in Somali and then English.
xusuusta shiday
Manta waan Riyooday marna waan Riyaaqay hadaan Roori karayana Runtii maanan joogeen. Riwaayadan I Riiqdee Rubadayda Ruxaysee igu Reebtay Raadkaan xusuus iyo Rogaal celin aan ka raysan waayee Rabiyoow sidii Roon ee Raali aad ka tahay ee raaxo leh I Raacsii.
Fusing Memories
I dreamed one day if I could run
I wouldnt be here
this concert affected me instantly,
it touched me sharply,
it pushed me hard,
it opened my heart softly,
it opened my eyes widely,
it woke my memories suddenly
it shook me like an earthquake
