After several years sterling work as Poetry Can Treasurer, Jo Goldsworthy, is to resign as a Poetry Can Trustee and we're looking for someone with experience in accounting or finance to fulfill this essential role.

Poetry Can Treasurer: role and person specification

The role as member of the board of trustees.

As a member of the board, you will work with other trustees to oversee the strategic development of Poetry Can, and to ensure the organization is managed efficiently and effectively. This will entail preparing for and attending board meetings of 60-90 minutes held once every 2-3 months in central Bristol. In addition, from time to time, there will be opportunities to work with other trustees and management on special projects.
Initially the role would focus on overseeing the integrity of our day-to-day finances, before taking on more strategic and developmental responsibilities.

The role as Treasurer

As treasurer you will:

  • Work closely with management to ensure timely, accurate, and informative reports on financial matters are provided to the board.

  • Liaise with our book keeper to ensure the timely and accurate recording and reporting of income and expenditure.

  • Liaise with our accountant to ensure timely preparation of statutory reports.

  • Lead the development of the financial aspects of our strategic plan.

  • Oversee the financial resources of Poetry Can and advise on how these meet current and future needs.

  • Present financial reports to the trustees at each board meeting.

  • Oversee the selection and provision of external financial services (e.g., book-keeping, annual accounts, and audit) to ensure suitability and value for money.

  • Present and approve the annual accounts to be filed with the Charities Commission.

  • Work with management to develop annual budgets for approval by the board.

  • Keep the board and staff informed of regulations that might affect the organization (e.g., pension provision, charitable obligations).

  • Ensure suitable systems and policies are in place for the effective management of finance, reserves, risk, and investments.

  • Ensure systems and policies comply with relevant accounting standards, and that sound internal controls and statutory reporting are in place.

  • Review financial information in funding applications.

Skills and experience needed

To be suited to this role, you will:

  • Hold a professional qualification or similar experience in accounting, finance, or business management.

  • Be willing and able to provide constructive challenge to ensure financial integrity and strong governance.

  • Have a commitment to the aims of Poetry Can.

  • Have strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively as a part of a team.

  • Have a developing understanding of voluntary and arts sector funding and its challenges.
