After an academic career in chemistry, I took early retirement in 1984 and began painting, moving from Manchester to Orkney. Damage to optic nerve following an eye operation which caused distortion to my visual field, meant I was neither able to continue living in rural Orkney or to continue painting, and I moved to Penzance in 1994 where I began writing and am currently putting together a collection of poems.

I have been running a poetry writing workshop meeting twice a month for the past three years. This functions through worksheets giving themes and possible approaches for the next two sessions, which are distributed in advance. These sheets are then discussed in the meetings and the poetry generated is circulated, read, and critiqued. The group is a non-profit making venture and the cost to members is restricted to shared cost of renting our room.

As well as drawing attention to this group for new local writers, I am also interested in making use of electronic means for establishing this sort of poetry workshop connection beyond Penzance and environs, extending it in fact to anywhere where such a need is expressed.

Poet Said, by Poetry Ireland in 1997.
