THE FORWARD PRIZES FOR POETRY 2014

To be awarded at London's Southbank Centre on September 30th

The Forward Prizes for Poetry are among the most coveted annual poetry prizes in Britain and the Republic of Ireland.

They were first awarded in 1992: past winners include Thom Gunn, Seamus Heaney, Alice Oswald, Ted Hughes,

Carol Ann Duffy and Kathleen Jamie.

The three prizes are unusual in honouring the work of established poets (Best Collection £10,000) alongside newcomers

(Best First Collection £5,000). The Best Single Poem award (£1,000) is a prize for which only award-winning poems and

published works not yet collected in book form are eligible.

All works entered for The Forward Prizes for Poetry will also be considered for inclusion in The Forward Book of Poetry,

an anthology of the year's best poetry, as chosen by the Prizes' judges.

Category A: The Forward Prize for Best Collection, £10,000

Category B: The Felix Dennis Prize for Best First Collection, £5,000

Category C: The Forward Prize for Best Single Poem, £1,000

The Colour of Saying - A Creative Writing Competition in Celebration of Dylan Thomas

Aim:

• For original and new pieces of creative writing to be based on Dylan Thomas’s poem ‘The Hunchback in the Park’

• To create a 5-year rolling programme which includes other disciplines, such as poetry accompanied by music, film scripts, play scripts,

and dramatic monologues

• To encourage everyone, including trauma or war victims, prisoners, abused wives or husbands, immigrants or refugees to a new country

who do not speak the host country’s language

Guideline:

Responses to the poem ‘The Hunchback in the Park’ can be in poetry, prose-poem, prose, diary form, and letter form.

We recommend all entrants read the rules carefully before entering.

2014 Manchester Writing for Children Prize

The first ever Manchester Writing for Children Prize invites the submission of poetry to be read by children within the

age group of five to 12. Portfolios should contain three to five poems, totalling together no more than 120 lines.

Prizes include:

publication of selected pieces from long-listed entrants in a new anthology;

an invitation to appear alongside Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy at a special event at the 2014 Manchester Children's Book Festival for the short-listed entrants;

and a cash prize of £2,000 for an overall winner – to be announced at that event.*
