Buxton Poetry Competition 2014 (deadline 7th April)

The theme is The Natural World.

You might like to describe a landscape, an event in nature, or perhaps an animal. You could write about something huge or you

could focus on something tiny. You could tell them how you engage with nature, or how the natural world affects you, or you could

take them on a journey through the natural world. Or if you have a different take on the theme.

Categories

Open Poetry — ages 18 and over*

Young People’s Poetry — aged between 12 and 17*

Children’s Poetry — aged up to 11 years old*

* age as of 1st April 2014

Entries must be on the theme 'MASK'. The theme may be interpreted in any way by the author. Tehre will be an award for the best creative use of the theme.
The closing date for entries is 31st May 2014.
Entrants may submit one poem only.

The winning 20 entries will be published in an exclusive anthology by Miracle and get free copies of the magazine along with other opportunities.
The entrant must mention his/her name and age in the email itself. There will be a separate award for the best poet under 25yrs of age.

The Judge of the 2014 poetry competition, Ian McMillan, is well-known to Radio 3 audiences as presenter of The Verb.

He is also poet-in-residence for English National Opera, The Academy of Urbanism and Barnsley FC. He’s a regular on

Coast, Pick of the Week, You & Yours, Last Word and The Arts Show. Ian’s latest books are This Lake Used to be

Frozen: Lamps (Smith / Doorstop Books) plus 101 Uses For A Flat Cap (Dalesman) with cartoonist Tony Husband.

He will be appearing at Ledbury Poetry Festival in 2014.

Be inspired by weather, good or bad, or just make a reference to (e.g. 'a sunny disposition' , 'he stormed in' )

The 2014 Wigtown Poetry Competition is now open for entries. You can enter online, or download this year's application form (.pdf).

Deadline for entries is 30th May 2014

Established in 2005, the Wigtown Poetry Competition offers a first prize of £2,000.

Entry is open to writers from the UK and abroad writing in English, while there are also dedicated categories for Scots Language and Gaelic.

This year’s judges are W.N. Herbert (Main Prize), Anne Lorne Gillies (Gaelic) and John Manson (Scots).
