A: Types of performance opportunities range from open mic/floor events where you will not get paid, to readings/performances at events and festivals for which you should receive a fee, though this will vary, poets may be able to negotiate a fee, travel expenses and hotel accommodation if they have to stay overnight.
See the Directory for a list of Poetry Promoters.
If you are based in the South West Region and you are a published poet and/or have been booked by a Poetry or Literature Festival please register your details on the Poetry Can website see A-Z of Poets.
Approach the organisers of poetry events with your contact details, a brief biography of your work, and 5 poems. You should have enough material for at least a 10-minute spot. Make sure your reading or performance style and experience is appropriate to the event or venue at which you want to perform.
Attend as many gigs as possible.
Although getting up on stage can be scary, particularly the first time, try attending open mic sessions where you wont be the only first timer.
